Why I Support Keeping Android Open
Android became popular because it gave users freedom and choice. Unlike closed ecosystems, Android allowed people to install apps outside official stores, explore open-source alternatives, and use their devices with fewer restrictions.
The Keep Android Open campaign raises concern over Google’s planned developer verification requirement, which could affect apps distributed outside the Play Store, including independent apps, hobby projects, and open-source app stores like F-Droid. According to the campaign, this could make Android less open by giving Google more control over what software users can install on devices they already own.
I support this petition because users should have control over their own devices. Developers should also be able to build and share apps without unnecessary gatekeeping, especially in open-source and community-driven spaces.
Keeping Android open means protecting user choice, developer freedom, and the spirit that made Android different in the first place.
